The first thing you notice rolling up to the Hotel Sierra Maestra on the Carretera Central, 1.5km from downtown Bayamo, is its Soviet-style architecture. It’s rather big and hulking, as you might imagine.
The next thing your eyes set upon is the more than 3-meter high marble statue at the entrance. Sculpted by the Cuban artist Pedro Pulido, it proclaims: “”Peace is not white, nor black, it’s blue””. A little cryptic perhaps, but the utility of this hotel – Bayamo’s largest – is anything but.
