Staying at the Villa is a pleasure due to its location in lovely, leafy Vista Alegre. This district sprang up between 1920 and 1950, growing into the most elegant residential suburb in Santiago. The bourgeoisie of the time moved east to escape the noisy and polluted colonial historic center. The lush area became Vista Alegre. It offered not only favorable climatic and environmental conditions, it also provided ample land to construct the mansions favored by the upper classes. Not surprisingly, the architecture copied North American and European styles. This heralded a new architectural era in Santiago – neoclassicism, eclecticism, art nouveau, Mudejar and even Gothic elements are prevalent here. Villa, built in the 1950s, became a tourist hotel in 1988. While more modest than the homes in this area, it’s a typical 50s villa, surrounded by opulent gardens. The guest rooms are in 13 buildings scattered over the spacious grounds, along with other facilities like restaurant and 2 bars. Villa is especially recommended for independent travelers with a rental car who want to explore Santiago de Cuba and nearby sites for a couple of days. It’s ideal for those who want to jump into the city center to enjoy its exciting cultural offerings, and then retreat to the peace and quiet of the suburbs. Rental cars can be parked safely in the hotel parking lot. The city center, approximately 4 km away, is easily reached by taxi.
